Ionospheric Models


The ionosphere constitutes a natural medium that can be used to communicate in the HF band over large distances. However, to ensure successful radio communications, it is necessary to know accurately how the ionospheric conditions vary in time and space along the path of the radio waves. For this reason at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia different ionospheric models have been developed to describe the long term (SWILM, SIRM, PASHA), the short term (IFELMOR, ap(t) model) and the real time (SIRMUP, ISWIRM, IMASHA) behaviour of the ionosphere. The main purpose of these models is to provide predictions of the ionospheric characteristics (foF2, M3000F2) that are most important from the radio-wave propagation point of view.
