National Research Program in Antarctica
Italy carries out research in Antarctica since 1985 through the National Program for Research in Antarctica (PNRA).

In 2003 it has been created the Consortium for the implementation of the National Research Program in Antarctica.

The Consortium took over tasks and specific know how of ENEA staff that was operating since about 18 years in Antarctica.

Four Italian scientific institutions are members of the Consortium:

  • ENEA (Ente per le Nuove Tecnologie, l’Energia e l’Ambiente);
  • CNR (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche);
  • INGV (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia);
  • OGS (Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale).

The INGV also participates in the formulation of the three-year scientific program of the Italian activities in Antarctica; a representative is a member of the National Scientific Committee for Antarctica (CSNA) and has the mandate to formulate, in consultation with the Consortium, the annual executive plans.

Numerous publications and ’data base’ demonstrates the INGV remarkable successes in over twenty years of activity of the PNRA. Here are projects related to Roma2 department activities.
